Detroit’s Homestead Kitchen Artisan Cakery celebrated April Fools' Day by sharing an AI-generated photo of a horrifying lamb-shaped cake for Easter

While many people played along with the joke, the cake shop shared another post on April 2 in response to “calls and messages of concern”

“Yes, we are ok. Actually, we are great,” the owner quipped

A Detroit bakery took April Fools' Day to an unsettling level with its special cake for Easter.

On Wednesday, April 1, the Homestead Kitchen Artisan Cakery celebrated April Fools' Day by sharing on Instagram one of their new offerings — a horrifying lamb-shaped cake for Easter, complete with bulging eyes, three crooked teeth and drooping frosting.

“Order your lamb cake for Easter!” the bakery wrote alongside an AI-generated photo of the cake. “Today is the last day to place orders. Choose from chocolate, vanilla, wedding almond, or lemon.”

Many commenters were quick to play along with the prank, while joking that the cake resembled “road kill” or even an “ashtray I made my dad in third grade.”

“We just relaunched our cake decorating program, respectfully,” the Institute of Culinary Education chimed in, while another person commented, “Where’s the knife? I need to put it out of its misery.”

Although most people played along with the prank, the bakery shared a photo of their real lamb cake the following day alongside a message to “clear the air.”

“Yesterday we shared a lighthearted post that may have caused some commotion in our community,” the owner of the cake shop wrote on Instagram. “As a result, we've received calls and messages of concern.”

Going on to clarify that the cake was, indeed, an April Fool’s joke, the business owner admitted that the prank put some new ideas into her head.

“The creepy lamb is not our work, but we will be creating some thanks to a handful of customers with a great sense of humor,” she said.

The owner also addressed anyone who may have been offended by the well-intentioned joke.

“While the lamb CAKE is a longstanding Easter tradition here in the States and is not a biblical representation of Jesus Christ, I can see why some might confuse this cake post with an attack on Christianity,” she wrote. “As a Bible believing follower of Christ, I pray that my whimsy does not stand in your way of experiencing the life changing power of the cross this week. Read: the post was never about Jesus.”

She jokingly insisted that, “Yes, we are ok. Actually, we are great!” in response to the commenters who had questioned her sanity.

“Thank you to all who asked and were concerned for us,” the caption continued. “We are elated that our post brought a much needed collective chuckle for so many people, considering how tough things have been in our world lately.”

By Sunday, April 4, the cake shop had made a purchasable version of the viral lamb cake — though arguably less terrifying than its AI inspiration.

“Our lamb cakes will wow your guests and leave them speechless,” the owner wrote alongside a photo of the cake. “Snatch yours up soon. These cuties won't be here long!”
