Day two of Glorious Goodwood 2026 features the Group 1 Sussex Stakes

Day two of Glorious Goodwood includes a tremendous edition of the Sussex Stakes (4.10pm) for the top-level milers. Again, the first five races are on ITV1 and you can read my views on all of those further down the page.

And if Goodwood isn’t enough, the Galway Festival continues apace and my colleague Harry Reynolds is across the Irish action.

1.50 Goodwood – Class 2 Handicap (1m 4f)

This is a good, competitive contest for three-year-olds and I’ve got a shortlist of Cannes, Infraad (nap) and Hatteen.

The first-named was well held in a similar race at Royal Ascot, but he went off favourite and his trainer, Joseph O’Brien, won that contest with another horse, so he could prove better than he showed last month. The stable had the winner of this race last year.

Andrew Balding’s Hatteen improved for the step up to 1m 4f when winning a decent Doncaster novice, although he’s a big horse who might not want to keep running on quick ground, so he may need the track to have been well watered (which can be the case at Goodwood).

My pick

I’m siding with Infraad for William Haggas. He has shown useful form up to 1m 2½f, most recently when the race didn’t unfold to help him after a sluggish start at Chester, which was probably a sharper track than ideal as he’s another big sort.

He will improve for this step up to 1m 4f and there’s little doubt that he’s going to prove better than his official rating of 90.

Infraad is a half-brother to 1m 2f Group 1 winner Nezwaah and his dam, Ferdoos, won a 1m 4f Listed event. Note, he is entered in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York next month and the trainer’s only other horse in that race is Derby runner-up and Group 1 winner Maltese Cross.

2.25 Goodwood – Class 2 Fillies’ Conditions Stakes (5f)

I’ll take Wild Blossom in this juvenile event. She was only 10th of 27 in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes over 5f at Royal Ascot, but she was third best on the far side of the track and the runner-up (from that group and overall) has since won a Group 2.

This less demanding course should help Wild Blossom, likewise the drop in grade. She cost 300,000 guineas in April and won a 5f Carlisle novice by 10 lengths on her debut, defeating subsequent Listed winner Crownbreaker, who runs in the 3.35pm.

3.00 Goodwood – Group 3 Oak Tree Stakes (7f)

Flora Of Bermuda has a 3lb penalty in this fillies’ contest for winning the 6f Group 3 Summer Stakes at York on her latest start, so Sayidah Dariyan may be able to reverse form from earlier in the season and prove best.

Sayidah Dariyan, who won last season’s Summer Stakes at York, was third behind Flora Of Bermuda in a 6f Newmarket Listed contest in May on their respective reappearances.

This filly, trained by Richard Hughes, has had only one outing since, finishing in midfield in a 6f Ascot Group 1. Flora Of Bermuda was tailed off that day, not giving her true running.

Both horses are stepping up to 7f for the first time, but Goodwood is a sharp track so the feeling is they will be fine.

Selection: 3.00pm Goodwood – Sayidah Dariyan ⭐⭐

3.35 Goodwood – Group 3 Molecomb Stakes (5f)

I’m siding with Ruler’s Pride in this two-year-old contest. He represents the same connections as Wild Blossom in the earlier juvenile race.

Having cost 550,000 guineas in April, Ruler’s Pride was more than three lengths too good for a useful subsequent winner in a 5f Ayr maiden on his debut the following month.

This Karl Burke-trained colt was then well beaten at Royal Ascot, but that came in the 6f Group 2 Coventry Stakes, for which he was sent off just 13/2, and he showed speed before being hampered. This is a lesser race and the drop in trip is in his favour.

🚨4.10 Goodwood – Group 1 Sussex Stakes (1m)

Qirat won this last year but he got a break on the chasing pack then and is highly unlikely to repeat the trick now.

Bow Echo had only a short head to spare over a rallying Gstaad in the 1m Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, but I feel this sharper track is more in the favour of the winner, who also won the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, so I expect him to confirm form.

Both of these three-year-olds are taking on older horses for the first time, but I also think that Bow Echo is quicker – and likely to be better suited to this course – than Opera Ballo, another of his main market rivals.

There is also Ten Bob Tony, who won the 1m Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, beating Opera Ballo into third.

I would not be surprised to see him follow up, but Bow Echo has 5lb in hand of that one according to the official handicapper (126 plays 121) and I’ll take George Boughey’s runner to prove himself the season’s leading miler.
