(KTAL/KMSS) — Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay up to $5.5 billion to settle about 76,000 lawsuits claiming its talc products caused ovarian cancer.

The proposed settlement would require at least 95% of the remaining claimants to agree before it takes effect. If approved, the company could begin making payments in 2027.

Johnson & Johnson continues to deny that its talc products caused cancer and said it agreed to the settlement to end years of legal battles. The company has previously tried several times to resolve the lawsuits through bankruptcy proceedings, but those efforts were unsuccessful
