Friends-to-lovers might be a beloved romance trope, but it's a scary one.

In Hallmark's Twelve Dates 'Til Christmas, Julian Morris plays the longtime friend of Mae Whitman's Kate, but it seems like there might be more than just a platonic connection between them.

For Morris, 42, the potential of a romance between his character and Whitman's is both "scary and exciting," as Kate has embarked on a holiday matchmaking program, at the behest of both Callum and Laura (Lucy Eaton), and is exploring a spark with Richard (Toby Sandeman), too.

"It's terrifying," Morris tells PEOPLE on the show's set in Ireland earlier this year. "It's everything. It's your best friend on the line."

Kate and Callum "clearly" have chemistry as friends, he explains. "They're the best of friends. They have this very deep connection where the other recognizes and knows and loves the other, so instantly and so well."

"Then of course, I think what's simmering underneath that, not totally driving that, but definitely simmering is the heat of romance."

That simmering tension "burns" between them, he says, as they "use their best friendship as an excuse to spend so much time together."

If Callum admits how he feels, "he could risk losing what's most important to him," Morris continues. "With that said, because they have such a beautiful connection and friendship, wouldn't [that] form such a wonderful relationship?"

The Little Women star says he was "really drawn" to play Callum in the series, which was adapted from author Jenni Bayliss' 2020 novel, because he's "such a sort of salt of the earth, decent guy, but in the beginning, almost to a fault. He really puts others ahead of himself."

Working on the show — which also stars Jane Seymour, Nathaniel Parker and Mary McDonnell — was "incredible," he adds.

"It's rare you get a job like this. It's been totally genuine. It's such a good set," he says. "All the actors are amazing. No one's a diva, Mae's incredible. It's such an amazing job in that respect."

As Kate, a talented Savile Row textile pattern designer, looks for love in the series, so, too, does her father Mac (Parker), with local widow Evelyn (Seymour). Things get complicated when Mac's ex, Kate's mom Delilah (McDonnell), unexpectedly shows up at her doorstep just before the holidays.
