Meghan Markle sparked a conversation during her appearance on “MasterChef Australia”. She offered a simple four-word response when asked how she preferred to be addressed. The Duchess of Sussex politely steered the conversation away from her royal title. She told the show’s judges that she would rather be called by her first name.
Meghan Markle’s response to the ‘Duchess’ discussion on MasterChef gets attention
The moment unfolded during Sunday’s episode, which featured Meghan Markle as a special guest for a challenge that required contestants to prepare a dish “fit for a duchess.” The episode was filmed during Meghan and Prince Harry’s week-long visit to Australia in April. It showed the duchess joining judges Poh Ling Yeow, Sofia Levin, and Jean-Christophe Novelli in the “MasterChef Australia” kitchen.
As Meghan entered the set, Yeow welcomed her by saying, “We’ve had royalty in the MasterChef kitchen before, but no one like this. All the way from sunny California, please welcome to MasterChef Australia, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.”

Shortly afterward, Yeow asked Meghan how she would like to be addressed. “Welcome. Do I call you Duchess?” the judge asked. Meghan responded with the now widely discussed four-word reply: “Oh, call me Meghan.” She then added, “Absolutely, yeah.” This exchange raised some eyebrows as historically, Meghan has been comfortable using her royal title publicly. She has done so during interviews, podcasts, and other promotional material.
Meghan also offered viewers a glimpse into family life with Prince Harry, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. While tasting contestant Aaron Kher’s dish, she joked that it contained more spice than Harry could handle. During the episode, Harry briefly greeted the contestants over the phone with a cheerful “G’Day.” After the call ended, Meghan smiled and said, “He’s a charmer, isn’t he?” She also spoke about cooking at home, explaining that she has “a lot of palates to appease” when preparing meals for her family.
Meghan added that both children often help in the family’s garden and like participating in meal preparation. “The kids jump in a lot, especially with the garden,” she said. She explained that preparing food together has become a regular family activity. “Family time, I think, is really key to connect through food, so as many meals as we can do together, we always do,” she added.
