Nick Reiner has been formally charged with the murders of his parents, acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced Thursday afternoon that the 32-year-old had been charged with with two counts of murder with the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders. Nick Reiner also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife. His arraignment will be scheduled for a later date.**

"Prosecuting cases involving family violence are some of the most challenging and heart-wrenching we face because of the intimate and often brutal nature of the crimes," Hochman said in a statement. "Rob Reiner was one of the greatest filmmakers of his generation. His murder and his wife of more than 35 years, Michele Singer Reiner's murder, are shocking and tragic. We owe it to their memory to pursue justice and accountability for the lives that were taken."

Hochman and Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell had announced their intent to file the charges in a press conference hours earlier.**

Nick Reiner accused of fatally stabbing his father, 78, and mother, 70, at their home in L.A.'s Brentwood neighborhood in the early hours of Sunday morning. Prosecutors said he fled but was arrested that evening in Exposition Park.

If convicted as charged, Nick Reiner faces life in state prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty. The DA's office said a decision on whether to seek the death penalty would be made at a later date.**

Prosecutors also noted that the charges filed in the case are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.**

Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead in their home on Sunday afternoon. On Monday, the LAPD released a statement saying an investigation found that Nick Reiner was "responsible" for his parents' deaths. He was arrested around 9:15 p.m. Sunday and taken into custody around 5 a.m. Monday. He is being held without bail after having his original $4 million bail rescinded.

Nick Reiner was expected to appear in court Tuesday morning, but his attorney, Alan Jackson, told *The New York Times* that he was not medically cleared to transfer from jail to the courthouse.

PEOPLE previously reported that Nick and Rob Reiner had a loud argument at Conan O'Brien's holiday party Saturday night, with one source claiming that Nick was "freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous." TMZ reported that Rob and Michele Reiner left the party after the argument. Later, PEOPLE reported that the couple's daughter, Romy, discovered her parents' bodies Sunday afternoon.**

Nick Reiner previously collaborated with his father on the 2015 film *Being Charlie*. He co-wrote the screenplay for the film, which was loosely inspired by his own experiences with addiction and homelessness, while his father directed the project. Nick Robinson played the lead role.

Rob and Michele Reiner met while the former was directing the 1989 romantic comedy *When Harry Met Sally*. The filmmaker said his instant connection with the photographer inspired him to change the rom-com's finale to end on a more romantic, upbeat note.

Rob Reiner rose to prominence as a star of *All in the Family* before pivoting to directing. He helmed some of the most beloved films of the 1980s and '90s, including *This is Spinal Tap*, *The Princess Bride*, *Stand By Me*, *Misery*, and *A Few Good Men*. Michele produced several of Rob's later projects, including *Shock & Awe*, *Albert Brooks: Defending My Life*, and this year's *Spinal Tap II: The End Continues*. The couple shared three children: Jake, Nick, and Romy.
