Music manager Scooter Braun, who purchased Taylor Swift‘s early music catalog in 2019, gave more details about the drama with the pop star.
Braun acquired Big Machine Label Group through his investment firm, Ithaca Holdings, in a deal valued at approximately $300 million. As part of the acquisition, he gained ownership of the master recordings for Swift’s first six studio albums, which were released during her time with Big Machine Records before she signed with Universal Music Group’s Republic Records.
“I don’t know Taylor Swift,” he alleged on the “Second Thought”podcast hosted by Suzy Weiss. “I think I’ve met her in my life three times. I have never had a substantial conversation with her in my life.”

“I got invited to a private party by her,” Braun recalled before their infamous feud happened. “She told me she had the utmost respect for me. I told her I had the most respect for her. You don’t spend $300 million buying a label that she’s on unless you’re excited at the opportunity to work with her.”
The situation unfolded in June 2019 when Swift called Braun out in a Tumblr post, writing, “Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.”

Swift eventually ended up rerecording four of those six albums, dubbing each “Taylor’s Version.” In May 2025, the singer took to her official website to announce that she had regained control of all her master recordings for an undisclosed amount of money.
“I’ve been bursting into tears of joy at random intervals ever since I found out that this is really happening. I really get to say these words: All of the music I’ve ever made… now belongs… to me,” the singer wrote (per People).
Braun said the Tumblr post left him “confused.”
He said, “You don’t spend $300 million buying a label that she’s on unless you’re excited at the opportunity to work with her… I will never truly understand that situation… I wish her nothing but the best.”
Braun noted that he “learned a tremendous amount” and has now moved on from the entire controversy.
“Here’s this big misconception that we knew each other and we had this feud and I managed her for years. People are usually shocked to find out that I legitimately don’t know her,” he said.
