Milly Alcock stars as Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Supergirl, in the first trailer for Supergirl

Alcock first appeared in the role when she popped up in David Corenswet's Superman movie in summer 2025

"I, Kara Zor-El, hereby declare that 23 will be the best year yet," Milly Alcock’s Supergirl says in the first trailer for the anticipated superhero movie.

After David Corenswet's debut as Superman on the big screen earlier this year, Alcock, 25, is playing the iconic superhero's cousin in the new DC Universe.

On Thursday, Dec. 11, Warner Bros. released the trailer for Supergirl. Set to the rock song "Call Me" by Blondie, the trailer opens with a hilarious appearance from Krypto the Superdog.

Kara appears to be having a rough time as she wakes up with a hangover. Following a few shots of her partying, she says to herself it'll be "the best year yet," before adding, "Let’s be honest babe, it’s not a very high bar to clear."

The trailer continues with a montage of action-packed sequences, Kara soaring through the sky in her signature costume and teases of new characters and creatures.

At the end, she compares herself to Superman, saying, "He sees the good in everyone and I see the truth."

The movie follows Alcock's appearance at the end of Superman, in which the character drunkenly visits Clark at his Fortress of Solitude and picks up Krypto, who is revealed as her pet.

At the Supergirl teaser trailer watch party that PEOPLE attended on Sunday, Dec. 7, in New York City, Alcock shared what she was most excited for viewers to see in the movie.

"I'm really excited for everybody to see all of our crew's hard work in curating all the worlds physically, all the aliens and the VFX," the actress said. "Literally thousands of people made this project come to life. So I'm really excited for their work to be reflected. For people to see it."

James Gunn announced via Instagram Threads back in May that director Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) had finished filming Supergirl. Gunn and Alcock both posted posters for the new movie in July following Superman's debut in theaters; playing off marketing for Superman, which encouraged audiences to "Look Up," the poster reads "Look Out."

Supergirl's cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, and David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham as Supergirl's parents. Jason Momoa, who previously played Aquaman, returns to the big screen as anti-hero Lobo in the movie.

Gillespie and Gunn were also in attendance at the trailer watch party and teased where viewers see Supergirl in the movie. The director said the character has "a lot of baggage and a lot of demons coming into this, which is very different from where Superman is in his life."

Gunn spoke about using Tom King and Bilquis Evely's comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as inspiration for the movie, saying, "The first thing that excited me was reading this book and saying, 'I think that's something we could adapt as a film and really have a different take on Supergirl.' "

"So many times female superheroes are so perfect and she's not that at all," he said. "She's very imperfect, like male superheroes have been allowed to be for a while."

Gunn's DC Extended Universe will continue after Supergirl with the movies Clayface, which stars Tom Rhys Harries, scheduled to release Sept. 11. After that, a sequel to Superman titled Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to release July 9, 2027.

Supergirl is in theaters June 26.
