Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen have been married for 30 years
Shortly after they celebrated the milestone anniversary in October, and ahead of Steenburgen joining season 2 of A Man on the Inside, they spoke to PEOPLE about their life together
Steenburgen gushes that Danson "really knows who I am," but with that kind of honesty comes conflict sometimes — but only about one thing
There's only one thing that makes a fight break out between Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen.
The couple, who celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in October, are a perfect fit for each other, as Steenburgen tells PEOPLE that she has "never been...as known as I am by him."
"He really knows who I am. He knows the most petty, small, ugly parts of me. And he knows the highest, soulful, aspirational parts of me and somehow loves the whole thing," she says. "And I've been extremely honest with him in this relationship, and that was important to me — and we both feel that."
Danson, 77, is in agreement, but he admits that he's the one who stirs up trouble. "The only time we fight or get angry with each other is when I am wrong," he tells PEOPLE.
"She'll point something out to me that disappointed or angered or hurt her feelings or something, and I just refuse to be that person," he explains. "'No, I'm not that person that you just described,' and so I argue and resist until I finally go, 'Yeah, yeah. That's me.' "

While that's a point of struggle for her husband, Steenburgen, 72, says, "I actually know and cop to how deeply imperfect I am. Ted doesn't like doing that."
"Yeah, I don't like doing that myself," Danson admits.
The couple, who started dating after they starred in Pontiac Moon together, reunited onscreen in A Man on the Inside season 2, which Steenburgen said she felt "so honored and lucky" to be part of.
"I listened to Ted come home through The Good Place and then the first season of this show just delighting in the extraordinary scripts and a cast and crew that he’s so proud to work with," she said. "And I was always a little envious. So to be asked to be a part of this was so thrilling."

Danson echoed his wife's sentiments, calling her casting a "dream come true."
"We both love being actors; we both love the process," he said. "So we spent two and a half months together getting up, going to work early, but just giggling the whole time because of what we got to say and do. It was just really a great opportunity." — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.
As if the couple didn't have enough time together — Steenburgen joined as a love interest to Danson's Charles — they "even shared a trailer," she said, and their dog was along for the ride as well.
"We don’t get bored with each other," she said. "I don’t know what that says, but I still feel like we have a whole lot of stuff I want to talk to him about."
